I see post after post and ad after ad of people promising teaching to help people become rich, get a boss mentality. In many ways, our unceasing restlessness has created amazing advances in technology and unprecedented in human history advances in eradication of poverty, and yet...

Christians should be about the work of teaching people that "Godliness with contentment is great gain" 1 Timothy 6:6. We have more than ever before, and we have more deaths by despair in America than ever before. Selfishness leads to death and destruction and people are dying from suicide with treasure hoarded that the global poor cannot even dream of.

Many people who find that they are full of despair can in part blame their restlessness on their laziness, as we see in 1 Timothy 5. People claim that they would be happy if they had more, but studies of lottery winners demonstrate over and over that it is not true.

Our message is countercultural. I have a boss, and He wrote down my instructions in a perfect book I do not get to edit or pretend I do not understand when it challenges me. I will never be content with injustice or with sin, but I am to work toward contentment in my circumstances. Also there is a star to the story, and it is not you. The King of Kings and Lord of Lords is a suffering servant and He showed us how to live, making much of others, not "building our brand" or "making our kingdom".

The prosperity (false) gospel blends the worst parts of our consumerist, hungry, broken, greedy, idolatrous culture with Christianity and reduces the Holy Spirit to Alladin's genie. If you work hard, make peace and provide for yourself and your family, you are doing well. Do not let anyone tell you a different story. Satan has been stirring up discontent since the very start of human history, and his lies lead to death.
