There is more to learn about Uvalde, but the information we have now is horrific.

The commander on the ground should be fired if he does not resign for his abject failure.

Those who reflexively defend the police and have already made smug posts and videos defending them should take the very hard lesson that their bias is blinding them in ways that are obvious.

The police who put their lives on the line to protect and serve are heroes. That is a high standard.

The cowards who stood in a hallway on the other side of an unlocked door while children and wives bled to death should feel deep deep shame. They ignored all that has been widely known about school shootings (suicide by cop attempts) since Columbine, and in their fear they failed. They had rifles and body armor and training that the shooter did not have, and they entirely failed in their duty.

It should also be a reminder of why many of us believe it is not just our right, but our duty, to protect our own families and avoid gun free zones, where you are relying on people who are unwilling to die to protect those you love.

This report is deeply tragic. It should result in significant consequences. I hope that it has national ramifications on access control, police training and response and accountability for failure.
